Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. But her parents would not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the impact stress might be able to have on their daughter. Perry confessed that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school, but started doing it to connect with new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, relocated to New York in search of television roles. Her small part was in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness brought her back to California for theater roles. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. The show was directed by Eugene O'Neill. Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was staged at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was featured nine times on the ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in the role of a political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She was also cast in The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The role was selected by auditions, even the fact that she had a deep relationship with the show.
